Rhabdomyolysis

Get the details on rhabdomyolysis.

Compartment Syndrome

One of the issues that may appear as a symptom of rhabdomyolysis is compartment syndrome. This occurs when things such as muscles, nerves, etc., are compressed within a certain location in the patient's body.

Symptoms

There are different medical symptoms that might show up when a person has compartment syndrome. Mainly, the characteristic symptoms are what are known as the five Ps. One of these is paresthesia, which is a sensation of numbness or tingling. Another is pain that is greater than expected. Pallor, which is a pale color that shows up on the skin, is another. The person might also have a palpable pulse. Paralysis is the final item amongst the five Ps.

Additionally, the skin might appear swollen. There may be bruising that is noticed. Please note that this is not a complete list of possible compartment syndrome symptoms. Moreover, this situation can develop even if the patient does not notice the symptoms listed here. Pain, however, is a very common one to be experienced.

Causes

One of the things that may cause compartment syndrome is rhabdomyolysis. Yet, this is not the only possible reason. Shinbone and forearm fractures are also potential causes. It may also occur as a side effect of using a cast. There are numerous other reasons, as well.

Diagnosis

A doctor or other professional makes the clinical diagnosis of a case of compartment syndrome. The pressure within a muscle compartment may be measured in order to check whether it is particularly high. However, there are different recommendations as far as the level at which fasciotomy (a treatment method) is necessary. One method of determination takes the actual pressure, while another takes the diference between it and the diastolic blood pressure.

Treatment

What treatment is prescribed for compartment syndrome is based at least somewhat on what type it is. If it is acute, then a fasciotomy is necessary, as it is a medical emergency. If it is of the subacute form, then despite not being as serious of an emergency, it still typically requires a similar treatment. The chronic form of this condition might be treated either with surgery or another method. In any event, discuss with a doctor to find out what is needed in your case, rather than using the details read here in order to make a decision.
